How to Prepare Your Water Heater for Winter

Did you know that there are things you can do to help your water heater in Plano, TX or your water heater in North Richland Hills, TX work better? It’s true! It’s especially important to take care of these things when winter is coming. Here’s what you can do.

If you’re not comfortable doing these things, give us a call at DNA Plumbing Services. Our our expert plumbers in Plano, TX or one of our plumbers in North Richland Hills can show you how to prep your water heater for winter so you can do it on your own next time.

Drain the Tank

Start by draining the tank of your water heater. This removes sediment so it doesn’t build up and cause clogs and other issues. Your water heater may have specific instructions for doing this. Most of the time, you turn off the water and power to the heater, attach a hose to the drain valve, then open the valve and let the water and sediment drain out.

Wrap It in Insulation

If you want to save money on energy costs in North Richland Hills or Plano. TX this winter, wrap up your water heater in an insulating blanket and secure it. You can buy these in kits at your local hardware store. They help the heater maintain high temp levels even when it’s cold outside. Your heater uses less energy and your costs go down.

Check That Temp

Make sure your water heater isn’t set any higher than 120 degrees. This is the ideal temperature because it ensures you get the hot water you need without anyone getting scalded and without wasting any extra energy. Your water heater can’t necessarily maintain higher water temps than this and it will waste energy trying to do so.

Inspect it Regularly

Inspect your water heater regularly, especially during the winter. Look for signs for freezing and/or leaking, like rust on the outside of the tank. If you see these signs, call us for North Richland Hills or Plano water heater repair fast because your water heater may be on the verge of a major leak or another problem. Don’t run the risk of major water damage this winter! Also be sure to check out our blog post about common water heater issues and how to fix them so you can avoid costly repairs down the road.
