Watch out for these warning signs of hard water:
- Visible residue and build-ups. One of the most obvious signs is the appearance of mineral build-ups (also known as limescale) on surfaces that regularly contact water. You'll see a chalky, white residue on faucets, showerheads, and drains. Dishes and glassware may come out of the dishwasher with white spots or a cloudy film, making them look dirty even when they're clean. You might also notice soap scum in your bathtub, on shower doors, and in sinks. These signs are a result of the minerals reacting with soap and leaving behind a sticky film.
- Effects on your body. Hard water can have a noticeable impact on your personal hygiene. The minerals in hard water prevent soap from lathering effectively and make it difficult to rinse away completely. How Do Water Softeners Work?
Water softeners are typically installed at the point of entry where your main water line enters your home or business. This location, often in a garage, basement, utility room, or even outside, allows the system to treat all water before it flows to any faucets or appliances.
These systems use a process called ion exchange to remove the minerals that cause hard water. Inside the softener's tank are thousands of small, negatively charged resin beads coated with positively charged sodium ions. As hard water flows through the tank, the resin beads attract the calcium and magnesium. They effectively "swap" the hard mineral ions for the sodium ions on their surface. This trade results in soft water with a low mineral content that flows out to your home or business's plumbing.
Over time, the resin beads become saturated with calcium and magnesium and cannot soften the water anymore. At this point, the system initiates a regeneration cycle. During this cycle, the water softener flushes a strong brine solution (a mixture of salt and water) from a separate tank through the resin beads. The high concentration of sodium ions in the brine solution overwhelms the calcium and magnesium ions, forcing them off the beads. The displaced hard minerals and excess brine are then flushed down a drain, and the resin beads are once again coated with sodium ions and ready to soften more water.
